Dr. Essence Johnson

Dr. Essence Johnson is an “HBCU made,” residency trained optometrist, wife and mother who practices and preaches optometry while serving and impacting her community in English and Spanish. Dr. Johnson is passionate about advancing healthcare through innovation, diversity, equity and inclusion, community awareness and student and corporate engagement.
She is a dynamic speaker with a galvanizing personality and has been featured in video and print for the work she is doing as the Chief Visionary Officer of Black EyeCare Perspective and co-founder and co-advisor to the Black EyeCare Perspective Pre-Optometry Club where they are redefining the color of the eyecare industry 1% at a time by creating a pipeline for Black students into optometry and cultivating and fostering lifelong relationship between Black eye care professionals, the industry, and their communities.
Dr. Johnson has partnered with global brands in eyecare to IMPACT HBCUs, start the eyecare industry’s first Signing Day for future optometrists and collaborated with Black women owned brands like, Vontélle Eyewear, to curate a limited-edition collection for Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. centennial celebration.
